Evaluation

Digipack

Here is the front and back cover for the album as well as the insert. The overall theme here is taking a class look and putting a modern twist on it. A theme of black and white was chosen with modern day New York as a basis. Certain styling choices were made that would make the 'artist' look fresh and modern yet still with a classic look- for example the new but old-styled American baseball jacket, the Ray-Ban sunglasses and the New York Yankees Hat. The same font for the artist name is used throughout the project so we kept with this- plus it stands out and adds a lot to a relatively simple page. The font for the back follows the same idea yet we decided to make it thinner looking more classic and not grabbing so much attention.

Poster

This is the poster created to advertise the album. It features the 'artist' looking down on a city thus looking powerful and linking to the theme of London. It also features two speakers connotating energy and liveliness. Other additions on the page include a web address, short paragraph, release date and a QR Code which can link certain devices straight to the web address to buy the album and find out information.

Themes: Rebellion

We explored different themes, such as the theme of rebellion, which are present within the song and in which we can link in to our video. Here we have created a mind-map expanding the main theme of rebellion giving us a clearer understanding behind the song meaning and what ideas to incorporate.

Lyrics Analysis: Example - 'Stay Awake'

As part of our planning, we analysed the lyrics of the song we are going to use. This is so we could get an understanding of what the song is about and make sure the visual connotations linked and represented this. From this exercise we found a range of different things out; for example, that the song is very much about being young and living life to the full not wanting to miss a single moment therefore staying awake.

Interview Analysis

By conducting an interview this has allowed us to gather rich in-depth qualitative data. As interviews are face to face this allows us to develop our questions to ensure we gain the data that we need. In order to do this we included leading questions and added extra questions to guide our participants in the right direction. Using secondary communication, we were able to look at body language, face expressions, the things they like, dislike and how they respond to things we say. We included questions from a range of topic areas to ensure we collected as much data as we could. This way we could make sure we had lots of different data to cover all areas of our music video rather than focussing on one particular aspect.

With the use of leading questions we could elaborate on any point we needed to gain more detail about. E.g looking in-depth at some aspects that are more important than others. The aim of our interview was to aid us when creating our music video, to produce a product that would suit our audience.By asking a young audience we as a group were able to associate ourselves with those of the same age. We know just what they like/dislike which helped us to get the answers that we wanted. Conducting an interview allows our audience to have their say, gives them a chance to tell us exactly what it is they want from our video and it is our aim to provide a new fresh video for our generation. We asked a range of useful questions from what aspects they liked most about a music video focussing on the mise-en-scene. This covers all areas from the artist, costume, props, setting to lighting and sound etc.We started our interview asking what most attracted our audience to a music video. This gave information on how to start our video giving us ideas about what best to include. The tune/rhythm attracted our audience first however it was just as important to have lively, fun images to grab their attention which is what we aim to do; without a combination of these, our audience felt they would not enjoy watching a music video as much. We found that a transition of setting can draw in an audience, if the setting is familiar with the audience they are then able to associate more with the video e.g. switch from london to party scene. The features of a video that seemed more attracting were the beat of the music, lyrics included in the video if they have meaning or the audience can associate meaning with the lyrics.

If we include humour in the video this allows us to interact with the young audience. We can adapt humour into our video through the way we film, what we film and other factors. From this interview we found most useful the questions where we asked what could benefit us most when creating our own video. By including a change in colour scenes, switching from vibrant colourful images to black and white proved a success with our audience. The focus on the mise-en-scene has the greatest effect on how successful our music video will be, our audience wanted to see attractive settings/backgrounds if this did not catch their eye they wouldn't be interested to watch it. The lighting can have an overall effect as this can change the way we view images. We are able to focus more light on some areas than others, we found dark scenes can enhance brighter scenes. The artist in the video can widely influence an audiences purpose for watching, the artist was a main factor for choosing a video. There was a combination of artist and theme that attracted an audience, the theme was important as this would determine whether or not the audience would enjoy the video. Is there a wide range of music videos available and would you like to see more made available. Our audience says yes there is already a diverse range of videos but those already available could be changed or adapted to improve some aspects. The different genres would bring around different factors that would be involved, you wouldn't include the same things in a rock video as you would a pop video. We produced our audience with the song in which we are going to use for our video and we asked our audience to comment about what they liked and what stood out most for them. They commented on the casuality of their outfits/clothing, this appeared up to date allowing young audience which they could relate to. The video represented a modern lifestyle, through clothing, atmosphere, partying etc. Commenting on how successful they thought the video was at attracting an audience through the use of setting, switches from london to parks. The natural setting was more popular than an artificial one.We feel that undertaking an interview with our target audience was a big success and we were able to learn alot about our audience, their wants and needs.

Audience Interview

Another way we will collect date is by conducting a filmed interview; this is a qualitative method of data. From this we can gain in depth answers which will expand the data we will have recieved from our questionnaires. By doing this, we are allowing people to expand their points and explain exactly what they mean and what they want. Then by filming, we are able to go back and review the interview in depth making reference to this when creating our product.

Questionnaire Results

Here our the results of our questionnaire displayed on 'Prezi'.

Audience Questionnaire

After completing research into audience theory, we will construct both a questionnaire and an interview as part of our audience research. This is to get an idea of the sort of things audiences want to see. The questionnaire will allow us to gain quantitative data with questions that will be simple and easy to analyse. We will ask questions regarding certain aspects we are interested in finding out, such as their age and gender, and then what music they are interested in, what are their personal preferences when it comes to music videos etc. We created our questionnaire on a website called SurveyMonkey, below are links to take part.

Brief Music Video Analysis

Sum 41 - The Hell Song
The music video for 'The Hell Song' by Sum 41 features a series of dolls- the four main ones having cut outs of the bands faces- also joined by a range of other dolls in the form of people such as Snoop Dogg, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Spice Girls, Metallica and Alice Cooper among others. The dolls give the impression they are at a Sum 41 concert making rude gestures and nudity (being censored) being present. The videos attention to detail make it stand out and ultimately makes it work. For example, the change of the dolls facial expressions and movement is what keeps it fresh. This is most useful to us as it shows how a 'successful' music video can be made using household items and an incredibly small budget.

Tegan and Sarah - Call It Off
The idea of this video was very minimalistic not using a specific or defining location, only a white backdrop. The two artists were also dressed in white with the only eye-catching colour being a selection of vivid telephone wires (in red, blue, green etc.) wrapping themselves around the artists. Again the camera work really made the video and gave it that professional edge. The video was able to be so minimalistic as the lyrics were the main focus telling the story of the video without needing any distractions.

R.E.M - Imitation Of Life
The video for 'Imitation Of Life' features scenes from an elaborate pool party. Michael Stipe, a member of R.E.M., said that "The entire video took 20 seconds to shoot. What you're watching is a loop that goes forwards for 20 seconds, backwards for 20 seconds, forwards for 20 seconds, backwards for 20 seconds, with one camera". This video was very easy to make, just the aspects of location and actors had to be taken into consideration, then once they had that it was only a matter of smartly capturing the right parts at the right time.

Bon Sinclar - Love Generation
The concept for this video is a boy leaving home in the morning and then riding his bike through a range of different locations from busy cites to deserts to beaches to dangerous backstreets etc. meeting various people and then returning home at the end. The actual video may have been a bit of a stretch to the film due to the various locations but ultimately the idea is incredibly simple and could heavily influence us when we create our music video. I really like how the video shows so many different aspects of life and overall has a very upbeat story, an adventure in the wild outdoors about spreading love.

Example - Stay Awake
The video for Example's 'Stay Awake' isn't as simple as the previously talked about about is incredibly doable. It features the artist singing against a white background next to a large copy of his logo, with scenes woven in between. These scenes feature groups of friends/people partying in woods in circus attire; dancing on location in London with landmarks in the background; dancing in a rave against giant speakers and again in a large field. Its basically a dance video with people who have different styles from different walks all enjoying and partying to the same song. I think this video could definitely be something that inspires ours.

Genre

As a group we have decided to create an R&B based music video. We considered many genres but finally narrowed it down to Pop, R&B, Indie and Electro House before deciding on our final choice. Artists that we are considering or are at least having an influence include Drake, Rihanna, Example, Kanye West, Coldplay, Kelly Rowland, David Guetta and Alicia Keys. After much thought we decided that either R&B or Electro House are the genres we will take further until we decide on a final.

Below is a mindmap we created that features specific genres and artists that we considered before coming to our final decision:

Introduction

For our brief we have decided to create a music video, poster and digipack. I think that given the combined skills we have as a group, this choice will be most advantageous. I feel that as a group we all bring different aspects to the project. For example, some have had experience in filming, another excels in photography. Personally I think that my skills in Graphic Design will benefit the group when creating the poster and digipack as well as being handy when creating the music video as I may be able to help with what looks right and professional.

There are 4 members in our group, here are the different skills/experience that each individual brings to the project:
Becky - Photography and editing
Sam. R - Editing experience, camera techniques & filming
Charlotte - Creative Skills and analysis
Sam. L - Graphic Design and filming (Inc. editing, picture manipulation, product creation)

Here is a link to my foundation portfolio based around the creation of a magazine cover, contents and double page spread. This can be closely linked with the poster we must produce.
